Grade 12
1 Credit Graduation Requirement

Offered in lieu of English IV, Accelerated English IV follows the curriculum as described in English IV. Accelerated English IV enriches the curriculum to meet the needs of the college-bound student. The main distinguishing feature is that the accelerated course will require more literature to be read, with an emphasis on breadth and depth, and writing to be produced with more complexity and sophistication. Students will be expected to perform at a higher level because of the accelerated nature of the course. Thoughtful discussion and critical analysis accompany the reading and writing. Students should develop a sharpened sensitivity to vocabulary, syntax, and prose style, all of which complement their knowledge of literature and power of expression. Students taking accelerated classes should be self-motivated and capable of both independent work and thought. Students should expect to do an amount of work ten to twenty percent above that which is expected in the English IV class. There is no expectation of summer reading. This class is recommended for students who intend to pursue a four-year college degree either through a combination of a community college and four-year college, or through a four-year college. Grades are not weighted for this course.
