1 Credit Graduation Requirement
The Advanced Placement course in English Literature and Composition engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. The course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods, concentrating on works of recognized literary merit. Writing is an integral part of the course, for the Advanced Placement Examination is weighted toward student writing about literature. Writing instruction emphasizes a wide-ranging vocabulary, a variety of sentence structures, a logical organization, a balance of generalization with specific illustrative detail, and an effective use of rhetoric.
In addition, for each class:
1. Summer reading - two novels with a reading journal
2. A minimum of five major works read during the school year
3. Homework - approximately 4-5 hours each week
4. Students' grades are weighted at the end of each nine weeks' grading period
